Dragon's Head Productions is a non-profit all volunteer organization
who's mission statement is to raise money for children's charities
through
safe and fun family entertainment.
Located in Sonoma , California  DHP

is made up of  a group of family and friends that volunteer their time
and
effort for this great cause.

HISTORY
DHP started as a simple home haunt  in 1992. Charter members Mike and Kathy Marcrum plus their daughter Khristine Marcrum put up a few decorations to entertain the neighborhood trick-or-treaters. Over the years it grew in size until the complete front yard was a tented haunted house.

In 1998, after many people asked if they could donate money towards the haunt, the Marcrum's found a local children's group that would  love the donation.

The Valley of the Moon Children's Home collected donations that evening totaling over $500. The next year the family moved to a new home and held the Haunted House in their new area. The same charity collected the donations and made $900. By this time the haunt had grown far to large for just the family members and friends so the search was on for dedicated people who loved the holiday and could donate hours throughout the year to the event.

A large step taken in 2000 was the actual forming of Dragon's Head Productions. Several members of the group filled out the paperwork to get a non-profit status from the IRS. It was a hard job but it was completed in time for the 2000 haunt. That year also found the haunt being built on a public lot instead of in the yard.

The third change was the new charity cause The Sonoma Children's Cancer Foundation .This group works year around with young children and their families to deal with Cancer. After many hours of hard work the first donation to them was $2000. They used that money for a trip for the children and their families during the holidays.

The Haunt had grown to big to build out of our own pockets anymore. So to solve that problem the group started having kids game booths at local events and festivals. The money raised at these events helps offset the cost of the Haunt thus leaving more of a donation for the Charities.

2001
2001 was a new challenge. A place to hold the haunt had to be found. Thanks to the kindness of long time Sonoma family, the Norrboms, a lot was found and the Haunt was on for another season. This location gave us a chance to really grow. Our membership was up to almost 20 year  around members. At the end of the season we were very happy to present  the charity with a check for $2500.

2002
The 2002 season was a great success. We saw a increase in guests, plus we made a lot of changes that improved the haunt itself. After such a great year it was hard for us when the haunt was robbed right after Halloween and we lost our air compressor, boxes of costumes, and many props. This is going to be a large set back for the 2003 season, but we are haunters and we will go on! Thanks to the kindness of a local family the air compressor has already been replaced with a newer one.

2003
What happened to 2003? The year went so fast and the haunt season went
even faster. We had a record year with more sponsors, volunteers, and charity donations than every before.

The Sonoma High Chapter of the FFA

was thrilled when we surprised them with a check to buy a much  needed piece of equipment.

Representing the Sonoma Children's Cancer Foundation Megan Cates
gladly excepted this years check from Khyren Cox, one of the junior members of DHP. Megan is a wonderful example of the people that work with SCCF. She not only fought a tumor on her lung, but also a brain tumor at the age of 16. She is now 19 and one very happy young lady. Her smile tells it all.

Another amazing young lady from the SCCF is Aubrie Maze. Wanting to do something for other youths dealing with cancer, Aubrie wrote a project book. This book takes you through her experience with cancer as a young teen and all the trials ahead. The pictures and text hold nothing back, but helps the new patient find ways to let their feelings out and to know that someone has been there before and survived it.

Aubrie was the first recipient of the
Edward E. Reardon Memorial Scholarship
.
Her positive actions to help others, her wonderful personality, and
her drive to go forward made her a perfect choice.

The first check was presented by Mrs. Lucy Reardon. A long time
supporter , Mrs. Reardon was proud to present the check in her husbands honor.

We have received so many requests for information on Aubrie's book that we have added this link to her website.

2004

We thought we would be going strong this year, but Halloween was here before we knew it. We grew this year by adding a stand alone gift shop and a complete Children's area. Nothing ever goes smoothly and 2004 was no different. We started off with a fire that destroyed some of the walls and part of the storage trailer that belong to our partner Jeff Brown.

Then opening weekend we were again robbed at the site. Even with totally  enclosed walls and people sleeping at the site we had our complete airbrush  makeup set taken. The value of this loss is close to $3000. This hurt because it is one of our biggest money makers, so we are going to have to replace it before our events start in May.

On the good side of the year, it was a biggest year yet. Not only in size, but in actors,  and guests. We will be able  to increase our donations to the local Children's Charities, and maybe add more.

2005
2005 will be the 5th Anniversary of the founding of DHP, and the 13th Anniversary  of the Dragon's Head Inn Haunted House.
These are both big anniversaries for the group and because of that  there were lots of new events and surprises in 2005!

Not one but two new charities were added to our donation list in 2005.The first being the

"Chilly Willie Foundation"

This group was started by the Father of a young boy with Autism when the schools started cutting back on the Special Education Budgets. The money that they raise through  the year goes to special equipment and other items that were lacking in the school system for special needs students. To try something new this year they built a wishing well outside the haunt and people tossed in their change each evening. At the end of the season we matched the customers donations. After taking all the change to the
Sonoma Valley Bank and having them count it up the Chilly Willie Foundation was given a check for over $600!

The second new charity was the "Valley of the Moon Boys and Girls Club". Dwayne is a volunteer at our haunt and each year he brings kids from the club to help scare our customers. In 2005 we donated $600 worth of sports equipment to the club. When we delivered the equipment to the club the greatest comment was heard...

" Hey we have indoor soccer nets, no more having to use chairs!"

Pictured above is Dwayne Kilgore and several of his sports program boys with a few of the sports items donated. . The tall young man in the back row is Philip and he has also been a volunteer at the haunt for many years.

What will 2007 bring, we have no idea. We can only hope that we can keep raising money to donate to these charities!
